FOR THOSE WHO ONLY HAVE FEW DAYS.

This circuit of about 300 km, can be done  in 2 or 3 days. There you will visit the monastery of Manzuchir, not far from the small town of Zuunmod. Then you will make a big loop that will take you through the magnificent national park of Terelj.
Finally, you will go down south towards the monumental equestrian statue of Genghis Khan. Finally you will come back,  following the same route - via Zuunmod - to avoid the traffic jams in Ulan Bator. You can find lots of accommodation in Terelj but also in Zuunmod.

One of the national parks of Mongolia. The Terelj tourist zone has a number of "tourist camps" (Mongolian: жуулчны бааз, juulchny baaz). It is about 80km north-east of Ulaanbaatar, is a deservedly popular destination. At 1600m, the area is cool and the alpine scenery is magnificent, and there are great opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, swimming (in icy water), rafting, horse riding and, for hard-core extreme sports fanatics, skiing in the depths of winter.

The park has many rock formations for rock climbers, and includes two famous formations named for things they resemble: Turtle Rock (Mongolian: Melkhii Khad) and the Old Man Reading a Book (Praying Lama Rock).

Terelj was first developed for tourism in 1964 and 30 years later it became part of the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. To the north-east, the park joins into the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, comprising over 1.2 million hectares of the Tov, Selenge and Khentii aimags.

The Khan Khentii park is almost completely uninhabited by humans, but it is home to endangered species of moose, brown bear and weasel, to name but a few, and to over 250 species of birds. The Turtle Rock, or called Melkhi Khad by the locals, is an interesting rock formation looking like a turtle. The Turtle rock is set in a valley, it was about 20 minutes drive from my gear camp.

If you are fit and slim, you can climb behind the rock and access the head of the turtle, here you can find a very small hole where you squeeze through. When if you managed that, once here there is a superb view point over the valley. Coming back in is more difficult as there is nowhere to put your feet, usually someone has to pull you from the other side. Bayanzurkh mountain locates in the National park. The mountain is an army worshipped mountain.
